Job Description

Summary: Project level work that requires the knowledge of surveying principles, processes, equipment and software. The Sr. Land Surveyor must possess a professional Surveyor license (current OR preferable, WA a plus), knowledge of jurisdictional and company surveying standards, and capabilities to supervise staff.

Duties and Responsibilities: (*essential function)

  1. Communicate effectively with others.*
  2. Manage projects (client communications, budget, and schedule).
  3. Conduct research, assess level of effort, and prepare statements of work and proposals.
  4. Establish and monitor the survey department goals and progress.
  5. Prepare an annual budget in coordination with pertinent management.
  6. Review, on a continuous basis, the general business climate for the department to develop new business opportunities, ensure excellent customer service, expand business and maintain existing relationships with clients.
  7. Promote a marketing and promotional program aimed at increasing sales and measuring department and company performance.
  8. Develop and implement policies and procedures designed to promote a collaborative team philosophy within and outside the company, and to build a positive company image.
  9. Review/interpret field notes, import field data, research relevant survey documents, and perform calculations.*
  10. Prepare project related documents, including exhibits, maps, plats, surveys, and legal descriptions, and survey notes.*
  11. Interpret record drawings.*
  12. Provide supervision for field and office staff as needed.
  13. Manage selected projects (client communications, budget, and schedule).
  14. Conduct research, assess level of effort, and prepare statements of work and proposals.
  15. Use survey equipment and software.*
  16. Use network drives, email, and management systems as dictated by project requirements.*
  17. Provide training in areas of professional expertise as requested.
  18. As a Sr. PLS be able to create estimates and scoping documents for both Private survey clients and possible Public Agency work.
  19. Be able to supervise a multiple team office, financial responsibilities and crew management.

Education/Experience: BS in Surveying or Engineering or six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and jurisdictional surveying standards. Effective communication skills both verbal and written are required.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and skills to effectively utilize surveying and drafting software (i.e. AutoCAD, MicroStation, Trimble Access or Survey Pro and Trimble Business Center), network drives, email, use of internet browsers, and management systems as dictated by project requirements.

Certificates and Licenses: PLS and valid Driver’s License Required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual should possess the willingness to grow into managerial responsibilities after a period of time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but occasionally can be high.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to walk; use hands and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand and talk or hear.

When visiting sites personnel are required to wear appropriate PPE. Certain work sites will require the wearing of hard hats and safety glasses which will be provided by the company. Safety vests and shirts are required for all work sites.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

All field personnel are required to wear long pants and work boots. Certain work sites will require the wearing of hard hats which will be provided by the company. Safety vests and shirts are required for all work sites.
